A 23-year-old labourer, Johnson Duah, who resides at Kokoso in Kumasi, has been slapped with a 288-month jail sentence by the KMA Circuit Court for raping a woman who was sleeping in her room.
The victim, an Assistant Administrator at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), was taken to a nearby garden at knife-point and raped repeatedly by the convict popularly known in the community as Kofi Junior.
The court presided over by Mrs. Mary Senkyere was informed Johnson Duah also stole one Toshiba laptop and a cellphone belonging to the victim after subjecting her to torture by inflicting multiple machete wounds on her body, foot and hands.
The prosecutor ASP Felix Akowuah said the victim recognised the convict as her attacker five days after the incident which occurred on March 19, 2018.
According to him, Johnson Duah, who was armed with axe and machete, broke into the victim’s room around 2:00 am on that day while she was fast asleep, and ordered the victim to bring out her money otherwise he would kill her.
ASP Akowuah narrated that the convict subjected the victim to severe beatings amidst death threats when she could not give him any money.
Being angry, he therefore dragged the victim to a nearby garden in front of an uncompleted building and demanded to have sex with her, the prosecutor asserted.
He disclosed further that the convict slashed the victim on the shoulder, foot and both palms with the machete he was holding when she refused to succumb.
The prosecutor added that Kofi Junior subsequently had his way and sexually assaulted the victim repeatedly to his satisfaction. Later, she became weak.
He later bolted with the laptop and the Infinix Hot 3 mobile phone both belonging to the victim, ASP Akowuah said.
Five days later, the woman was walking down the road when she spotted her attacker for the first time since he sexually assaulted and robbed her, said Mr. Akowuah.
He was arrested, and after police investigation, charged with the offences and arraigned.
