John Mahama Denies Coup Plot

John Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has denied the coup plot allegations levelled against him by the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe Abronye.

The Special Aide to the former President, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, reacting upon the instructions of her boss, said in a statement that “I have been instructed by former President John Dramani Mahama to respond to yet another publication of false and concocted stories by one Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye, from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).”

The former President has also repulsed the allegation that he met some Al Qaeda elements towards staging a coup d’etat in the country.

Describing himself “as very well known, both in Ghana and internationally, as a democrat and a strong believer in strengthening democracy, not only in Ghana, but across the continent of Africa,” he said it could not be true that he could be associated with anti-democratic activities, acts of destabilisation, and abuse of other human rights.

Continuing, he said that this is not the first time that Abronye has made “despicable and reprehensible allegations and caused same to be published” about him and other leading members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The statement added that the former President’s clarification of the subject, in the light of the police action, is simply to re-emphasise his integrity and democratic credentials.

The Wednesday, February 16, 2022 statement comes on the heels of the arrest of Abronye and the subsequent granting of a bail by an Accra Circuit Court.

The police have acted swiftly in the face of recent coup remarks.

Mawuse Barker-Vormawor

A former Presidential Staffer and convener of the #FixTheCountry movement, Oliver Mawuse Barker-Vormawor, was arrested, charged with treason and put before court over coup comments he made on social media.

The Ashaiman District Court, where he appeared, remanded him for two weeks after turning down a bail application.

He was arrested at the Kotoka International Airport on Friday, February 11, 2022, when he arrived from the United Kingdom (UK).

He was also said to have declared his intention of staging a coup should the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy) be passed by Parliament.

Abronye

Abronye was invited by the Greater Accra Regional Police for the allegations he levelled against the former President and subsequently arrested.

He was said to have made the allegation on Hot FM’s political talk show “Dwene Ho Bio” hosted by Agya Wusu, while responding to issues leading to the arrest of convener Oliver Barker on his attempt to stage a coup if the E-Levy is passed.
