Nana Kwabena Okyere being carried to the hospital
A funeral ceremony at Ayanfuri in the Central Region ended in tragedy after the Mmratehene of the area, Nana Kwabena Okyere, reportedly died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound while testing spiritual protection, popularly referred to as “juju.”
The incident occurred on Friday, May 9, 2026, during the funeral rites of Abusuapanin Akwasi Kwateng.
According to police reports, Nana Kwabena Okyere, the Mmratehene of the Ayanfuri Traditional Area, was in possession of a pump-action gun when the weapon discharged, causing severe injuries to his abdomen.
He was immediately rushed to the Ayanfuri Pentecost Hospital for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead while receiving medical care.
His body has since been deposited at the Dunkwa-On-Offin Municipal Hospital Mortuary pending further investigations by the police.
The incident has renewed concerns over the use of firearms during funerals and traditional ceremonies despite existing government restrictions.
The government in late 2025 announced strict measures against the use of live ammunition and firearms at public celebrations, including funerals and festivals.
The Ministry of the Interior subsequently imposed a temporary ban on the use of all firearms, whether licensed or unlicensed, at such gatherings in an effort to curb accidental shootings and loss of life.
