Former President John Dramani Mahama has called on the government to resolve outstanding Dagbon Chieftaincy issues in the Northern Region.
According to him, after the resolution of the Dagbon Chieftaincy crisis, there are a few outstanding Chieftaincy issues in Dagbon and called on the government to resolve them so that there will be total peace in Dagbon.
“The Ya Na is the overlord of Dagbon and so those outstanding Chieftaincy issues affect his authority and powers over Dagbon and so I hope that government will look at those issues and resolve them so that we know that there is one overlord, one King and that it is what he says that goes in the kingdom of Dagbon.”
Currently, Nanton, Bimbilla, Karaga among others are facing unresolved Chieftaincy issues in Dagbon.
He stressed that any country that does not have peace has no progress and thanked Ghanaians for successful elections adding that in some other countries elections result in civil wars but Ghana has held eight successful elections and came out peacefully.
“ I want to thank everybody and assure you that our party knows the responsibility it has to play to maintain peace and order in this country and that is why even the last election with all the provocations, killings we had to remember that we had to keep Ghana peaceful and took the case to the Supreme Court so that Ghana will continue to remain poor peaceful.”
He thanked the King of Dagbon for playing an important role in the settlement of the Dagbon Chieftaincy issues during the NDC era.
“ I am happy that at the end of the whole process it was you who emerged as the lord of Dagbon so once again I want to congratulate you on your elevation to the kingship of Dagbon.”
Mr Mahama made this known when he paid a courtesy call on the King of Dagbon at his Gbewa palace during his thank-you tour of the Northern region and thanked the King and the entire people of Dagbon for their support during the 2020 general elections.
Former President Mahama noted that during his regime they worked on various developmental projects in health, water, education, roads among others in Dagbon areas and called on the government to complete projects started by the NDC in Dagbon especially the eastern corridor road to creating an easy route to the southern part of Ghana for farmers, traders and the people of Dagbon to benefit from it.
The King of Dagbon, Ya Na Abukari II, commended former President John Dramani Mahama for his great leadership exhibited before, during and after the 2020 general elections.
“Your great leadership shows the extend you value the peace and progress of our great nation Ghana. Your subsequent contest of the election results in our law court also demonstrates the high level of value you attach to our democracy and the rule of law.”
The King of Dagbon, indicated that the Mahama led administration contributed overwhelmingly to the genuine peace and reconciliation the Dagbon kingdom is currently enjoying.
“ I must say that the peace we enjoying today has revived all development fibre of Dagbon particularly in Agriculture, education, health and brought about genuine reconciliation among individuals, couples, families and Chieftaincy gates .”
The Ya Na noted that Dagbon which was characterized by insecurity is now a very attractive place for investors, tourists.
He encouraged the former president and his party (NDC) to continue to offer constructive criticisms to the government to help ensure good governance and leadership.
Former President John Dramani Mahama also paid a courtesy call on the Mion Lana, Gulkpe Naa, Lamashegu Naa, Dakpema Naa and Sagnarigu Naa during his tour of the Northern region.
