The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a 36-year-old man allegedly having in his possession 228 parcels of compressed dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.
The suspect, identified as Haruna Iddrisu, a painter and a gardener, is believed to be the leader of a narcotic gang that has been transporting the drugs to Accra to sell.
DCOP Iddi Seidu, the Accra Regional Police Commander briefing the media said that the suspect is being charged with possessing narcotic drugs without lawful authority.
He said the Regional Police gathered information that some persons, noted for dealing in narcotic drugs have transported large quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp to Accra, and intelligence gathered revealed that Haruna Iddrisu, was the main distributor of the narcotic drugs.
“The Police trailed suspect Haruna Iddrisu and succeeded in arresting him at his hideout at Gbetsile, near Ashaiman and when a search was conducted, 228 slabs of dried leaves all suspected to be Indian hemp were recovered.”
He said investigations into the matter were ongoing to unravel the source of the drugs.
DCOP Iddi Seidu urged the public to continue to volunteer credible information to the police and always report suspicious characters or activities to the police for action.
