A Circuit Court in Techiman, presided over by Alexander Graham, has remanded a man in police custody for sending a gun to a voters registration centre.
Amadu Sualley was caught at the Zamalama R/C voter registration at Zamalama in the Pru West District of the Bono East Region.
He appeared before the court last Tuesday charged with possessing firearm without lawful authority and was taken into police custody until July 20, 2020.
According to the prosecution, Amadu was arrested at the registration centre in the company of another man during the exercise.
Amadu pleaded not guilty and his counsel pleaded for bail for him because he said he was a responsible man and would not run away.
He further pleaded with the court to grant him bail due to the Covid-19 situation. Besides, he said that the arms and ammunition act with which the accused was charged had been amended and argued that the new law did not say people should not possess gun since it is a licensed weapon and more so he did not display it at the registration centre.
Responding, the judge said the accused was charged with possessing a weapon without lawful authority and subsequently refused him bail and remanded him in police custody.
DCE Allegation
In a related development, the DCE for Pru West, Stephen Jalulah, at a press conference yesterday, accused the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Masswud Mohammed, of ‘arming’ people in the district to destabilize the ongoing voter registration exercise.
He alleged that the gun portrayed by the accused belonged to the MP per investigations, saying some of the guns sometimes slip into the hands of miscreants who used them for armed robberies in the district.
“Had it not been the vigilance of soldiers who were going round to provide backup security to police in the area who spotted it with two men, we wouldn’t have known what would happen,” he added.
