‘Misinformation Poisoning Public Discourse’

Antonio Guterres

The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has indicated that the increasing misinformation is poisoning public discourse.

In a statement copied to the newspaper, the UN General Secretary noted that “mis- and disinformation is poisoning public discourse, polarizing communities, and eroding trust in institutions.”

He, therefore, called on institutions to come together and build a more just environment.

Antonio Guterres made this known on the International Day of Democracy, which was themed, “Empowering the Next Generation” –with focus on the essential role of children and young people in safeguarding democracy today and in the future.

The day is commemorated annually to review the state of democracy around the world.

The statement further indicated that “Democracy, the rule of law, and respect for human rights are bedrocks of resilient, inclusive, and peaceful societies. They underwrite freedom, advance sustainable development, and protect the dignity and rights of every person,” he explained. “On this important day, let us join hands across generations and work as one to build a more just world for all.”

The statement also stressed the need to expand the meaningful participation of young people in decision-making processes at every stage, adding, that it is important to invest in educating the youth and support them in building their skills.
