Police in the Chereponi District of the North East Region have arrested a total of 16 suspects in connection with the renewed clashes between the Konkombas and Chokosis.
Thirteen out of the 16 suspects are in the custody of the Northern Regional Police Command assisting in investigations.
One of the suspects, who fired at security personnel but was shot in the thigh in the process, is receiving treatment at Chereponi Hospital under guard.
Already, workers in the Chereponi District are fleeing the area due to the renewed clashes, as buses loaded with people are seen leaving.
The workers loaded in two separate buses left the Chereponi District through Togo to Ghana for their safety and have since arrived in Tamale, the Northern regional capital.
According to them, the shooting of the district coordinating director indicated that workers in the district were not safe and they could not take risks any further.
A teacher, Seidu Rashid, told DAILY GUIDE that the security personnel deployed in the area were inadequate to take charge of the volatile situation.
He disclosed that the security was not able to escort them out of Chereponi and as a result they had to go to Togo before getting a safe passage to Tamale.
Already, one person has been confirmed dead by the police in the renewed clashes.
Even though the police have officially confirmed the death of one person whose name is not readily known, there are unconfirmed reports that about six deaths have been recorded in the latest clashes between the two warring factions.
The Northern Regional Police Public Relations Office, DSP Mohammed Yusuf Tanko, confirmed the incident to DAILY GUIDE and stated that two communities were also burnt.
Five persons have been already been arrested in connection with the latest clashes.
The fight started on Sunday over a piece of farm land between the people of Nambiri Zongo, a Chokosi community and a Konkomba community called Tombo – both in the Saboba District.
According to the police, a group of Konkombas burnt down Koli, near Nambiri.
The inhabitants of Nambiri launched reprisal attacks by burning Nanduni, an already devastated village of the Konkombas.
