ONE PERSON died and another declared missing on Monday following rainstorms that flooded homes and streets in the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi.

A 32-year-old man, Kofi Appiagyei, was swept away at Asawase and his body discovered inside a stream at Atonsu the next day after the storms.

The victim, a welder by profession, was said to be walking home in the rain when the disaster occurred. According to the Manhyia Police Divisional Commander, ACP Kwaku Buah, the family of the deceased reported his disappearance on Monday.

At Tafo, a search continued for a missing nine-year-old girl following the torrential rain. Areas such as Tafo, Asokore, Asokwa, Oforikrom and Kwadaso were also flooded.

At Ohwim-Amanfrom, travellers faced disruption after the heavy rains flooded roads when the Barekese dam burst its banks, causing vehicular traffic jam.

Footage of the incident showed how a motor rider was trapped in the middle of a flashflood when he attempted to cross the flood to the other end of the road. Nearby houses were also submerged.

Police and officials of National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) have urged children not to paddle in flooded areas.
