A young woman and her three-year-old son met their untimely deaths in their room at Timber Market, near James Town in Accra, during last Sunday’s heavy downpour.
The woman has been identified as Augustine Adoku aged 22, and her son, Sampson Adjei Owuraku. Police suspect they were electrocuted.
Their bodies were discovered around 10 am in their room, together with some personal belongings which were half burnt after their room had become flooded.
Residents told the James Town police that they had gone to the place to rescue them when the floods became heavy, but they unfortunately found the two dead.
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, DSP Effia Tenge, confirmed the incident, saying it was reported to the police around 10:30 am on Sunday, and preliminary investigation showed the naked wires had contact with the fire.
She said the James Town police visited the scene and discovered the bodies lying in a wooden structure.
“When the bodies were inspected, there were no visible marks but personal belongings, including clothing, were partly burnt,” she disclosed.
She said preliminary investigation revealed that during the heavy downpour, the wooden structure which serves as living room for the deceased persons became flooded and the water came into contact with one of the naked electrical wires triggering a shock.
The bodies have since been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for autopsy.
