The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso East Constituency, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, has made a call for the construction of an ultra-modern market in the constituency to improve trading conditions after a fire outbreak which occurred on Monday, May 11, 2026.
Speaking to journalists after touring the area, the MP further appealed to the government and the public to support victims as well as assist in rebuilding the market, and made a promise to donate GH¢5,000 each to affected traders to help them rebuild their businesses.
“I call on the government, our president, and the entire nation to come and assist in these difficult times. Seeing that this is a serious tragedy that has affected our people last night, my Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) officials all rushed here and were able to help. But you can see that some serious devastation has taken place,” he said.
He expressed his heartfelt sympathies to traders who lost their goods in the fire, as well as everyone affected by the incident at the market.
“I want to send my heartfelt sympathies to the people who have lost their wares, and also to all the people who are in this market,” he added.
This comes after the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed that a late-night fire outbreak at Nima Market in Accra was successfully brought under control without any casualties, although several traders lost their shops and goods in the blaze.
According to the GNFS, the fire broke out on Monday night and quickly spread through parts of the busy trading area before firefighters managed to contain it.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the GNFS said it received a distress call at 10:38 p.m., with the first response team from the National Headquarters arriving at the scene within 10 minutes under the leadership of Assistant Divisional Officer I Ahoni.
Firefighters, with support from crews from the Circle and Parliament fire stations, brought the fire under control at 11:21 p.m. before fully extinguishing it at 1:44 a.m.
According to the GNFS, preliminary investigations suggest the fire may have been caused by an electrical fault, although further assessments are ongoing.
The GNFS disclosed that 10 wooden structures and their contents were completely destroyed, while several nearby structures were saved through the swift intervention of emergency personnel.
“Fortunately, no casualties were recorded,” the GNFS stated.
They also commended officials of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Police Service for assisting during the operation. Affected traders returned to the scene to assess the damage and salvage partially burnt goods from the debris by Tuesday morning.
