MPs Want Police Protection

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, The Majority Leader

The leadership of Parliament has called for individual protection of Members of Parliament (MPs) by the state following constant attacks on their lives by armed robbers and what they claim to be hired assassins.

The Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who made the call on behalf of the MPs, said parliamentarians also needed police protection like Ministers of State.

The call was made yesterday by the leadership following another attack on the MP for Nhyiaeso, Kennedy Kankam, by armed robbers in his house after which a lot of his personal properties were stolen from him.

The Majority leader said attacks on MPs in recent times had become too many and unbearable so there was the need for the state to provide personal security for MPs.

He said MPs were also performing duties for the state as in the case of Ministers of State, adding that even metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives had been provided with security by the state.

The MPs were unanimous in supporting the call by the Majority leader noting that their security was very paramount for them.
