The National Communications Authority (NCA) has awarded three spectrum lots in the 2.3 GHz band to Telecel Ghana to support the telecommunications company’s planned rollout of 5G services.
The award follows a competitive licensing process conducted by the NCA covering the 700 MHz, 2.3 GHz and 3 GHz spectrum bands.
Telecel Ghana secured all three lots for which it applied, which will strengthen its capacity to expand its network and improve mobile broadband services for customers.
The Director of External Affairs of Telecel Ghana, Komla Buami, said the additional spectrum represented an important step in the company’s preparations to introduce 5G services.
“This award is an important step in our preparations for the rollout of 5G. It will provide additional capacity to improve the customer experience and contribute to the continued growth of Ghana’s digital economy,” he said.
Mr. Buami said the spectrum assignment would enable Telecel to expand its network capacity in response to growing demand for mobile services while improving the quality of service available to customers.
He also expressed the company’s support for the NCA’s efforts to rationalise spectrum resources and promote their efficient use across the telecommunications industry.
“We look forward to continued engagement with the Authority on spectrum rationalisation. A well-planned spectrum framework will support network investment, improve service quality and provide the capacity required to meet the country’s growing demand for mobile services,” he said.
Five lots were made available in the 2.3 GHz band under the licensing process, with Telecel applying for and securing three of them.
The assignment was subsequently completed in accordance with the provisions of the Request for Applications issued by the NCA.
The latest award forms part of broader efforts by the communications regulator to release additional spectrum to support mobile broadband services and expand 5G connectivity in Ghana.
The additional spectrum will provide operators with greater capacity to accommodate increasing data consumption and support the development of advanced mobile services.
For Telecel, the acquisition of the three spectrum lots provides additional resources for network investment as the company prepares for its 5G rollout and seeks to respond to the growing demand for high-speed mobile connectivity.
