No Bail For Asiakwa Teacher’s Killers

The suspects

The Kyebi District Magistrate Court in the Eastern Region yesterday declined bail for the six boys arrested in connection with the murder of George Somuah Bosompem.

The beating of Mr. Bosompem? a Religious & Moral Education (RME) teacher of the Asiakwa Salvation Army Basic School on April 25, 2019 around 8:00pm, who died later in the hospital? sparked public outrage.

The six boys who are currently in prison custody charged with conspiracy and murder include Richard Amaning, 18; Mireku Emmanuel, 19; Philip Kodie, 19; Offei Frimpong, 19; Ezekiel Boadu, 20; and Evans Aboagye, alias Otega, 19.

When the case was called yesterday, Chief Inspector Margaret Kontoh told the court presided over by Mrs. Alice Afuah Yirenkyi that the legal advice from the Attorney General’s office on the way forward for the case has not yet been received by the police.

The suspects’ lawyer, Philip Nimo, was not present yesterday and the court ordered the police to bring back the boys on October 15.

The East Akim Municipal Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Maxwell Owusu, expressed his satisfaction later to Citi FM at the pace of the prosecution and said, “I think for now, everything seems to be on course. The transparent manner in which the court is trying the case, I think we are satisfied with it as an education directorate. All that we are seeking for is justice. We want the process to continue to be as transparent as possible.”

Mr. Owusu also commended the MCE for the area and the police for putting in place measures to protect teachers in the area.

“At the last meeting with the Municipal Chief Executive, the police officers they made us to understand that they put some measures in place to ensure that our teachers are safe in the community…. We are convinced that by the time school resumes we will have all these things in place,” he added.
