The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has commended the Electoral Commission (EC) for allowing media coverage of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting, describing it as a “laudable move”.
This decision comes ahead of the December 7 election, where the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has demanded an audit of the voters’ register.
Henry Nana Boakye, NPP’s National Organiser, welcomed the EC’s decision on Joy FM’s Top Story, stating that it promotes transparency.
However, he emphasized that this should not become a norm and should remain at the EC’s discretion.
Henry Boakye also deemed the audit unnecessary, citing the Commission’s framework as sufficient to address any errors.
“There must be some compelling, overwhelmingly reason to call for such, and I do not see so in this particular matter,” he added.
Background of the IPAC Meeting
The IPAC meeting brings together representatives from all registered political parties and the EC to discuss electoral reforms, operational challenges, and strategies for ensuring credible elections.
Previous Developments
The NDC had previously called for live broadcasts of IPAC meetings, citing concerns over transparency.
Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Director of Elections and IT for the NDC, emphasized the importance of openness in building trust and preventing conflict.
Implications
The EC’s decision to allow media coverage demonstrates a commitment to transparency and accountability.
