The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has revised its internal election guidelines following challenges encountered by some members of the party during its ongoing registration and electoral processes.
A statement issued and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, said the decision was taken after the emergence of practical difficulties across various stages of the exercise.
He explained that the National Executive Committee (NEC), acting on behalf of the National Council in accordance with Article 10(4)(1) of the party’s constitution, considered and approved the revised guidelines at an emergency meeting held at the party’s headquarters at Asylum Down on Wednesday, April 8, 2026.
The party noted that the review forms part of a broader effort to strengthen its internal electoral system and address concerns raised by members, which include the suspension of elections in disputed areas.
“Where a Polling Station Elections Committee is unable to conduct elections due to concerns by party members, including those who registered online but were denied access to write their names in the polling station membership register, the Committee shall suspend the elections at that polling station and refer the matter to the Regional Steering Committee through the Constituency Executive Committee for appropriate direction,” it stated.
The guidelines further stated that each Polling Station Elections Committee will conduct up to twenty-five polling station executive elections while in cluster polling stations, any member who votes within the cluster will be eligible to contest in any polling station within that cluster, provided the individual resides within the electoral area where the polling station is located.
It also said that a person will only be eligible to contest in polling station elections if he or she resides in the electoral area and votes at that polling station.
The party however, mentioned that for special polling stations located in security zones, tertiary institutions, government ministries, market centres, hospitals, and similar areas, members may contest as long as they reside within the electoral area.
“At the electoral area level, the revised guidelines limit each Electoral Area Elections Committee to conduct up to ten Electoral Area Executive elections. Additionally, polling station officers who intend to contest in these elections are required to resign from their positions before filing their nominations.
“For chapter elections, the party outlined the composition of the Chapter Elections Committee, which will include a representative appointed by the Branch Executive Committee as chairperson, a representative from the Chapter Executive Committee, and a representative from the Chapter Council of Elders. The elections will be conducted either in person or via the party’s official e-voting platform,” parts of the statement read.
It added that in line with the party’s constitution, only members who have been known and active for at least two years will be eligible to vote or contest in chapter elections, indicating that chapter executive positions will mirror those at the constituency level, including roles such as chairperson, vice-chairpersons, secretary, organiser, women’s organiser, youth organiser, Nasara organiser, and communications officer.
It said chapter executives will appoint officers to roles such as research officer, electoral affairs officer, financial secretary, and persons with disabilities (PWD) coordinator, among others.
The party also stated that branch elections will be conducted either in person or through the party’s e-voting platform, with eligibility again limited to members who have been active for at least two years.
“The structure of branch executives will mirror that of regional executives, with positions including chairperson, vice-chairpersons, secretary, organiser, and other key roles. Elected branch executives will also appoint individuals to several supporting positions, including legal officer, research officer, and special duties officer,” the party noted.
It also announced that the National Executive Council has constituted an ad-hoc committee chaired by Peter Mac Manu to develop a comprehensive manual detailing the roles and responsibilities of party officers at all levels.
Other members of the committee are Osei Bonsu Amoah, Deputy Chairman, Henry Nana Boakye, Enoch Anhwere Afoakwah, Anthony Namoo, Haruna Mohammed, Justina Marigold Assan, Amma Frimpomaa Dwumah, and Joana Addah.
The party urged all stakeholders to familiarise themselves with the revised guidelines and adhere strictly to their provisions, to ensure a smooth process.
“These adjustments are aimed at strengthening internal democracy, enhancing transparency, and ensuring a smooth, credible, and inclusive electoral process across all levels of the party,” the statement added, stressing that the leadership remains committed to upholding the values and traditions of the NPP.
