Asante Kotoko legend Stephen Oduro has stated plainly that fashion freak pastor Daniel Obinim was miles ahead of him in terms of football.
The former Super Sport United/ Real Tamale United (RTU) diminutive midfielder wondered why the beleaguered preacher did not pursue the sport he did with brilliance.
According to Oduro, nicknamed ‘Tico Tico’, Obinim was one of the finest frontmen and would have travelled very far in the football world if he had attached seriousness to it as he did in their youthful ages.
Oduro, considered as one of the nation’s intelligent midfielders to have graced the domestic top flight league, said in an interview, “I was born at Akwatia Line, the same house as Bishop Daniel Obinim, who is a man of God today. He was our next door neighbour and was really a good footballer. ”
He added, “I don’t know why he quit football, but he was so good at playing.
“Obinim was a better player than I was. Anytime we played, I wanted to be part of his team because if I decided to play for the opposing side, they will score us.”
Oduro, who played alongside Nana Arhin Duah, Michael ‘Ember Power’ Osei, Michael Asante, Shilla Alhassan, Michael Ofosu Appiah (CID), Aziz Ansah, Yusif Chibsah, William Tiero, Frank Osei, among others, attracted the lenses of South Africa top flight side, Super Sport.
Obinim jettisoned his soccer career, and he is currently the head pastor of the International God’s Way Church.
He was recently arrested by police officers from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and charged in court for the publication of false news and forgery of document, contrary to Sections 208 and 159 of the Criminal and other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) respectively.
