THE ASANTEHENE, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has stressed the need for the state to create an enabling environment for the private sector to thrive.

According to the Asantehene, it is important that the private sector, the main drivers of economies of countries, be involved in industry development.

He was speaking during the commissioning of the Genser Energy Gyegyetreso Gas Pipeline at Anwomaso in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital on Wednesday.

Continuing, the Asante King said the private sector, when given the needed support, has the potential of creating jobs to boost the economy.

The Asantehene was of the opinion that “the government’s role should primarily be in policymaking rather than directly setting up and managing companies.”

The Genser pipeline network spans about 430km and consists of 23 gas stations.

The commissioning of this important project would pave the way for the Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Plant to come alive.

The project, which is expected to be commissioned by President Akufo-Addo, would help to boost power supply and industrialisation of Ghana’s northern sector and beyond.

The Board Chairman of Genser Energy, Nana Osae Nyampong VI, expressed concern about “the challenges associated with concentrating all projects under government agencies.”

According to him, government should embrace the private sector’s “expertise to accelerate development and better serve the needs of citizens.”

On his part, the Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, emphasised the government’s commitment to completing such projects for industrial growth.
