Our EC Solid As Rock

The Electoral Commission (EC) knows its obligations to the people and the Republic.

Its officials, especially the leadership led by the Chairperson, Ms Jean Mensa have demonstrated their purity of heart to always organise free, fair and transparent elections.

Some political parties can make noise about the neutrality and fairness of the EC, but when they are called upon to justify their claims like it happened to the NDC in 2021 in their election petition, their struggles in the witness box will compel the justices of the apex court to call for “convenience break.”

We urge the EC and its Chairperson to stay focused and ignore the “ugly” noises from the NDC and its allies in the media, academia and civil society who claim neutrality but are more aligned than the card bearing members of the umbrella family.  We remind Ms Jean Mensa not to forget the NDC’s double standards and work to deliver a clean register and subsequently free, fair and transparent public elections.

Just two attitudes of the NDC in recent times should inform the EC to continue to stay within the narrow path of the regulations because the NDC will applaud the EC only when things go well for them.

When the NDC lost the Kumawu bye-election, they blamed it on a bought verdict and the EC, but when the NDC won Assin North, they saluted the EC for a job well done.

The NDC always forgets that in an electoral contest it is either a win or defeat. We know defeat is painful, but the NDC must learn to accept defeat and stop behaving like a bad workman who always blames his tools.

The EC must conduct every election according to the rules and regulations.

The leadership of the EC has time and again made it clear that it cannot rig the election for any political party, and that success at the polls depends on right messages, strategic campaigns and vigilance at the polling stations.

We trust in the capacities and competences of Ms Jean Mensa whose appreciation of the democratic ethos has never being in doubt. We are confident that the EC Chair and her lieutenants will undertake a hassle-free registration exercise and top it up with another credible 2024 elections, which will be the toast and envy of the international community.

We also know like what magicians used to say when faced with challenges by invoking the spirits to never put them to shame, that in case of Ms Jean Mensa, as a believer in God, that in the exercise of her mandate Jesus will never put her to shame.

Those who attempt to put sand in her gari will be exposed to public ridicule. Madam Chair keep your eye on the ball to help our democracy to endure in the oasis of crisis in our sub-region.
