The Tema Police yesterday gunned down a member of an armed robbery gang after robbing two businessmen of an amount of GH¢23,000 they had cashed from a bank.
The businessmen, a Ghanaian and Lebanese, who deal in frozen fish at the Tema Fishing Harbour, were tracked by the robbers on a motorbike and after they had cashed the huge sum of money from the Community One branch of the Zenith Bank near the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), the hoodlums pounced on them.
The robbers engaged a police officer escorting the businessmen and in the ensuing shootout around the Tema Development Corporation traffic light, one of them was gunned down dead.
Information available to DAILY GUIDE suggests that having been hinted of an imminent attack, the bank provided an escort for the businessmen who had withdrawn an amount of GH¢23,000.
The robbers were said to have crossed the path of the businessmen and threatened to shoot them if they did not surrender the cash.
The escort opened fire on the robbers, with one of them sustaining injuries and dying later, but the other robber escaped with the cash.
“One of the bank staff told us that some persons on a motorbike around suspected them to be armed robbers. They, therefore, asked us to wait so they could provide us with a policeman to escort us,” Musud, one of the businessmen, said.
“Two men on a motorbike from nowhere cross us immediately we got to the traffic light and started shooting and the policeman responded, resulting in an exchange of fire between the robbers and the police officer,” he narrated.
