Quack Doctor’s Clinic Closed Down

The suspect with an arresting officer

THE MEDICAL and Dental Council of Ghana (MDC) has closed down the facility operated by a Traditional Birth Attendant, Paul Amaonoo, popularly known as Doctor Paul, whose recent activities allegedly caused the deaths of an expectant mother and her baby.

According to the MDC, the facility called Royal Medi Clinic at Peace Land located at Peace Land in the Kpone-Katamansu Municipality of Accra was being operated by the suspect without licence.

The MDC said the clinic was not certified and did not meet the requirements of a treatment centre.

Officials of the council told DAILY GUIDE that the facility needed to be secured to avoid tempering of evidence as investigation had been initiated by the council and police into the matter.

It would be recalled that Doctor Paul, a 35-year-old man, who claimed to be a traditional birth attendant, was apprehended by the Zenu/Atadeka District Police Headquarters for reportedly having a hand in the deaths of an expectant mother and her baby.

The deceased, later identified as Lucky Teiko Nyinaku, called on the facility of the suspect who purportedly attempted to help the woman give birth but the 30-year-old and her baby died at the unlicenced health facility.

According to the Tema Police, on February 8, 2021 at 4:20 pm, the victim’s husband, who is the complainant in the case, reported that his wife was in labour and he rushed her to the Royal Medi Herb Clinic for delivery at about 5:00 am the same day.

The police said the woman gave birth to a baby boy but the child passed on some few minutes, explaining further that “after the delivery, the wife was bleeding profusely and the Doctor Paul referred them to Trinity Hospital at Zenu but the wife was pronounced dead on arrival.”

The police continued that while investigation was ongoing, Doctor Paul reported at the station and was immediately arrested and detained for further investigations.

The bodies have been conveyed and deposited at the mortuary of the Tema General Hospital for autopsy and preservation.
