Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has added his voice to calls to rebuke ‘Counsellor’ George Lutterodt over comments that “every rape victim at a point enjoys the act.”
He condemned Lutterodt’s statement, indicating rape and violence against women are issues Ghanaians should not joke with.
Mr. Oppong Nkrumah, who spoke through a tweet, said Ghanaians should develop a robust environment to protect women.
“Rape and violence against women are not something we should joke or toy with. We need to develop a more robust environment for protecting our wives, daughters, sisters, and mothers,” he tweeted.
George Lutterodt, who made the unfortunate comments on Adom TV, has since faced a lot of vilification from the public—with some saying he should be banned from talking in the media.
Actress Ama K Abebrese, who started it all, described the so-called counsellor as a “rape apologist”, adding that rape is “something that any real professional counsellor and expert will discredit.”
There is also an online petition initiated by Ivy Prosper, a Ghanaian-Canadian TV host, copied to the Ministry of Communications, National Communications Authority and Ghana Psychology Council, which seeks to revoke the influence the self-acclaimed counsellor has garnered over the years.
The Gender Ministry has also petitioned the National Media Commission to ban George Lutterodt from making appearances on any media house for programmes.
