Maxwell Kofi Owusu (INSET) sent off Isaac Donkor for aggressively protesting against a penalty decision
The referee who handled the game involving Hearts of Oak and Elmina Sharks, Maxwell Kofi Owusu, is on his knees begging for his not too impressive performance.
His decision to award a penalty to Hearts after a Sharks defender prevented a goal with his shoulder generated arguments among the playing body and officialdom of the Elmina-based side.
Replays, however, have suggested the ball indeed came off the player’s shoulder, and so it should not have been a penalty.
The referee compounded Shark’s situation by sending off Isaac Donkor for his vehement protest against the penalty decision.
Unfortunately for Hearts, the penalty taker Victor Aidoo missed it and should have been retaken after the assistant referee flagged it to signal the goalkeeper moved off the line.
But referee Owusu ignored and play continued.
Later in a social media post, the referee apologised for his errors stating, “This was absolutely not a good decision.”
Hearts won the game 2-0 and moved to second on the league log.
