Fifi Kwetey
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has directed all individuals serving in government to resign from their positions before contesting for any executive position within the party.
General Secretary of the party, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, who announced this last Thursday at a press conference in Accra, said the directive forms part of preparations for reorganisation starting from January 30.
Mr. Kwetey stated that any individual serving as an appointee within government interested in vying for a position within the party must resign at least six months before filing nomination forms.
He said, “Any person contesting any position in the party who is holding an office to which he or she was appointed by the President, or the government, shall resign at least six (6) clear months from the said office or appointment prior to the filing of the nomination forms for the party position he or she desires to contest.”
According to the General Secretary, the directive applies to Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Chief Executive Officers and their deputies, as well as Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).
“Persons who are affected by the restrictions specified in paragraph (1) of this section shall include the following: (a) Ministers and Deputy Ministers; (b) Chief Executive Officers or Managing Directors and Deputy Chief Executive Officers or Deputy Managing Directors, or analogous officers; (c) Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Administrative Units of the Government of Ghana,” he stated.
Mr. Kwetey, however, mentioned that chairpersons of boards are exempted from the directive, which is aimed at ensuring fairness in the party’s internal election processes.
“A person appointed as a chairperson or member of any Board or any analogous position shall be exempt from the restrictions imposed by paragraph (1) of this section. NDC has so many people, our numbers are massive, millions of supporters.
“We have so many people capable of holding positions. It cannot be a situation where only one or two individuals are capable of holding an appointed position in government and also a party position,” he added.
Filing of nominations by aspirants for party positions will start from Saturday, November 7, to Monday, November 9, 2026, while the vetting of aspirants is slated for Thursday, November 12, and Friday, November 13, 2026, followed by National Delegates Congress on December 19, 2026, to elect new national executives.
