Sarkodie and Samini have called on Ghana’s electorate to vote for President Akufo-Addo in the upcoming 2020 presidential elections.
Both artistes made the call in their latest separate music which endorsed a second term bid for the President.
Samini tweeted on Monday that he will vote for the President on December 7, and his reason is that he wants to choose a leader who he believes is bringing a “hopeful future” for the country.
“These are challenging times for the world. My voice, my vote will support leadership that has empathy and serves to create a hopeful future for the next generation,” he tweeted.
Samini also shared photo of some schoolchildren in President Akufo-Addo’s frame referencing the government’s Free SHS policy.
He went on to release a song titled ‘Kpoyaka’ with a video to trumpet the good things the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government has done for Ghana.
In a tweet, President Akufo-Addo responded to Samini, thanking him for supporting his second term bid.
On his part, Sarkodie also declared an open support for President Akufo-Addo in a new song he released just on Monday.
In the song titled ‘Happy Days’ which features Kuami Eugene, Sark indicated that President Akufo-Addo has implemented a number of good policies that are benefitting all Ghanaians.
The policies, he noted, include the Free Senior High school as well as the uninterrupted power supply to homes and industry.
According to Sarkodie, during the previous NDC administration, Ghanaians did not enjoy these policies which are being witnessed currently.
“We all spoke against the dumsor (erratic power supply) and the high inflation rate and so if these have been solved at the moment with Ghanaians also enjoying Free SHS, then all I can say is that Nana Akufo-Addo should continue for another four years,” he said in the song.
The new song has been trending on Twitter since Tuesday.
“Sarkodie only sent me the first verse of his rap which did not contain the endorsement for Nana Addo to aid me do the chorus. It was only at the video shoot that we got to know of the second verse, we confronted Sark’s management, and they denied…I am uncomfortable, I still don’t know Sarkodie’s motive for the song, it will have an effect on my career, I wasn’t ready to vouch for any political party openly….it will not end here,” Kuami Eugene had reportedly told 3FM.
Interestingly, the presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has reacted to Sarkodie and Samini’s endorsement of President Akufo-Addo, saying he has nothing against them.
Speaking on Starr FM on Tuesday morning, he said, “I don’t have any antipathy or anger with anybody who endorses Nana Addo, that’s their decision.”
“I like them, they are young talented musicians and my attitude towards them doesn’t change. Samini has been somebody that I liked; his music, ‘Linda’ and all that. We all loved those music, and so if he’s endorsed Nana Addo, he must have his reasons for doing that.”
“It doesn’t change my attitude towards him,” he added.
Mahama, however, said he is not encouraging the support of his campaign by celebrities due to antipathy they may suffer from supporters of other parties. This, he believes, may stifle their career growth.
Interestingly, in 2016, Mr. Mahama even flew in Nigerian celebrities to campaign for him when he was president but is singing a different song since he found himself in opposition.
Samini and Sarkodie are not the only entertainers who have endorsed Akufo-Addo ahead of the 2020 elections. The likes of Prince David Osei, Shatta Wale, Afia Schwarzenegger, Agya Koo, Matilda Asare, Empress Gifty, Socrates Safo, Nicholas Omane Acheampong, Bibi Bright, Diana Asamoah and Jessica Williams are just few who have voluntarily been campaigning for President Akufo-Addo in different ways to win the 2020 presidential elections.
