Sea Defence Project In Ahanta Progresses

Construction work ongoing at Amanful Kuma

Residents in the coastal communities of Adwoa, Funko and Amanful Kuma – all in the Ahanta West Municipality of the Western Region – can now heave a sigh of relief as the effort to check the persistent tidal waves and sea erosion continues to be fixed.

The government is executing coastal protection projects or sea defence walls in those areas to help stop the persistent degradation of the coastal stretch owing to the tidal waves.

The coastlines were disappearing at a faster rate which posed a threat to the inhabitants. In the past years, residents had to leave their homes for safety due to the marauding sea waves.

The 2.5-kilometre Amanful Kuma sea defence project, which is about 35 per cent completed, is being constructed by Mawums Construction. It is being executed at the cost of $25 million and is being funded by the Government of Ghana.

The project involves the construction of groynes into the sea to protect the boulders along the 2.5-kilometre stretch of coastline.

Last week, members of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Works and Housing visited the project sites to ascertain work done.

The committee members also visited Kwesimintsim and Apremdo where the dredging and desilting of two storm drains had also been awarded on contract to help prevent flooding when it rains.

Speaking to DAILY GUIDE after the visit, Kweku Asante-Boateng, Vice Chairman of the Committee, said he was impressed with the various stages of work.

He stressed that the government would continue to invest in essential areas of the economy including coastal protection projects to ensure that lives and property are protected.

Emmanuel Bedzrah – a ranking member of the committee – expressed disappointment over the delay in dredging the drains at Kwesimintsim and Apremdo, and the inability of the contractor to provide the preliminary designs and the contract sum.
