“Still” is a Fine Art Photograph created by Ibrahim Kareem. It was included as part of Kareem’s Solo Exhibition, titled “Echoes of Light,” which took place at Oluwole Omofemi Art Gallery (OAG) on December 5th, 2025. The photograph serves as an abstract representation of various themes including stillness, desire, freedom, and the human connection to light. Kareem uses a staged scene where one person is gazing upward at a bird that is frozen in mid-air against a brilliant blue background. On initial inspection, the photograph may appear to be a straightforward depiction of a single individual gazing toward the sky; however, it eventually reveals multiple layers of psychological and symbolic meaning. Through “Still,” Kareem illustrates how he utilizes photography to produce an environment in which an emotional or philosophical response from the viewer can occur.
The figure is placed at the center of the photograph, facing away from the observer. She stands at the edge of what visually represents a large urban cityscape. A series of long braids flow down the length of her body creating a significant vertical line within the composition, while her face is angled upward toward the sky. It is this act of gazing upward that will provide the most significance for understanding Kareem’s visual message. Rather than depicting the subject in a traditional portrait format, Kareem has intentionally obscured the subject’s facial features. Therefore, the focus of attention does not rest upon the physical attributes of the subject. Rather, it focuses on what she appears to be contemplating. Additionally, the positioning of her body conveys both thoughtfulness and anticipation and possibly even yearning. As such, the viewer enters into the internal world of the subject rather than focusing solely on her external appearance.
In this picture, a bird is flying high up in the air, with its wings spread wide, against a really cool background of clouds that are parted in a dramatic way. What’s really interesting is how the bird’s wings are outstretched, which makes a big contrast with the person standing still on the ground below. The way these two things are connected is probably the most fascinating part of the photo. The woman is stuck on the ground, while the bird is free to soar through the sky. She’s looking up at it, which makes it seem like there’s a connection between being human and being grounded, and the freedom that comes with flying. The bird could be a symbol of being free, having hope, wanting to achieve something, or wanting to be more than what you are. It’s like the bird is showing us that we can be more than just stuck on the ground, we can soar to great heights.
The picture “Still” is really captivating because it shows a moment that’s peaceful, but also has a lot going on. You’ve got a bird flying, clouds moving, and sunbeams shining through, but the woman in the photo is standing still. This contrast between calmness and movement makes you think. The woman might not be moving physically, but her eyes are looking up, which suggests her mind is active and thinking deeply. The title “Still” can be understood in different ways – it could mean the moment when the woman stops to look at the sky, or it could mean being strong and enduring through tough times. To be still can mean waiting, surviving, thinking, or holding on even when things are uncertain. In this sense, the woman in the photo represents someone who has paused in the midst of a busy city life to think about something bigger than what is around her. You can look at it like the woman is taking a moment to breathe, to reflect on her life, and to look beyond the everyday things that surround her. The photo is like a snapshot of a moment when time stands still, and all that’s left is the woman, the sky, and her thoughts. It’s a powerful image that makes you think about what it means to be still, and what it means to be strong. The woman’s upward gaze is like a symbol of hope, of looking beyond the present moment, and of finding something more meaningful. The photo “Still” is a great example of how a single image can have many different meanings, and how it can make you think about the world in a new way. It’s a reminder that even in the midst of chaos and movement; we can find stillness and peace. And it’s a reminder that being strong doesn’t always mean being active, but sometimes it means being still, and waiting for the right moment to move forward. Light is a big part of what makes this photo special, which is fitting given the title of the exhibition, Echoes of Light. The sun is low on the horizon, casting a warm golden glow over the sky and the city. Its rays pass through the clouds, creating a dramatic column of light that seems to reach down to the landscape. This gives the photo a kind of spiritual feel. The light isn’t just illuminating the scene, it’s actually part of the story the photo is telling. Kareem uses this image in a really powerful way. You see a woman standing in darkness, but behind her, the sky is bright and beautiful. This contrast is like a message of hope. It’s saying that even when things seem dark, there’s always a way forward, always a chance for something better to come along. The darkness isn’t total, it’s broken up by the light, which means that nothing is absolute, and there’s always room for change, for something new to happen, for a brighter future to unfold. The treatment of the sky is particularly effective. The clouds are neither completely dark nor completely bright; instead, they contain different tonal transitions that create depth and movement. The golden light around the bird produces a visual halo, making the bird appear almost transcendent. Whether this is intentional symbolism or simply a consequence of the dramatic lighting, it strengthens the spiritual quality of the image. The bird appears to occupy a space between the earthly and the celestial. The urban landscape below introduces another important dimension to the photograph. The city is densely populated and visually complex, yet it appears somewhat distant and subdued beneath the expansive sky. This contrast between the built environment and the open sky establishes a tension between confinement and freedom. The city may represent the pressures, routines and structures of everyday existence, while the sky represents possibility and escape. The figure stands between these two spaces, physically located within the city but psychologically drawn towards the openness above.
This connection between the person and the city makes the picture relevant today. The woman is not alone in nature, but surrounded by signs of city life. However, instead of looking at the buildings, she looks past them. Her gaze implies a longing to find deeper meaning beyond the physical world around her. You can see the photo as a commentary on how people nowadays seek calm and transcendence in a world that’s increasingly busy and overwhelming. The city, with all its noise and distractions, can be a challenging place to find peace, but this woman’s gaze suggests she’s looking for something more.
This photo is really well done from a technical standpoint. The way the light is used is great – it’s not too bright or too dark. You can still see the details in the front of the picture, but the sky is what really catches your eye. The warm colors make the picture feel more emotional and interesting. The darker parts of the picture stop it from feeling too happy or sappy. It all comes together to make the scene look like a movie – like a story that’s been carefully put together. The artist did a good job of balancing everything to create a nice atmosphere.
The use of light in this image is pretty overpowering. I mean, the sky is this bright, golden color and the sun’s rays are like a big show, making it really clear that the message is about hope and rising above. Some people might think this makes the picture a bit boring because it doesn’t leave much room for interpretation. The image tells you how to feel, and it’s hard to see it in any other way. But maybe that’s what the artist, Kareem, was going for – creating a picture that’s easy to understand and feel deeply, even if it’s not super complicated. What’s really great about “Still” is how simple it is. There aren’t many main elements – just the woman, the city, the sky, the sun, and the bird – but each one is important to the overall idea. The photo doesn’t need a lot of extra stuff or fancy staging to get its point across. Instead, Kareem uses the relationships between the elements to create meaning. You’ve got the stillness of the woman and the movement of the bird, the darkness and the light, the city and the sky, all working together to create a sense of contrast. In the context of the exhibition “Echoes of Light”, still becomes even more significant. Light is used both as a formal element and a metaphor, echoing across the clouds and the city to create a sense of something that lasts beyond the moment. The title of the exhibition fits perfectly with the photo’s themes of what remains after a moment has passed. The work asks the viewer to think about what happens in those quiet moments when someone stops, looks, and just exists. It’s like the image is inviting you to reflect on the present moment and what it means to be still.
This artwork is really thought-provoking and visually stunning. It takes a simple moment of someone gazing up at the sky and turns it into a deeper exploration of stillness, movement, light, and the human desire to aspire to something greater. The artist, Ibrahim Kareem, does a great job of using the bird as a contrast to the person, who is standing still, and the dramatic sunlight adds a kind of spiritual feel to the whole scene. It’s like the sunlight is highlighting the person’s search for freedom, hope, and meaning, and the bird is symbolizing the possibility of escape or transcendence. The way the light falls on the scene is almost magical, and it makes you think about the connection between the physical world and the world of emotions and ideas. Overall, the artwork is a beautiful and contemplative piece that invites the viewer to reflect on their own sense of freedom, hope, and solitude.
What makes this piece so powerful is how it conveys a feeling without revealing the person’s face. The fact that we can’t see her face doesn’t make the picture any less effective – it actually makes it more relatable. She becomes a kind of symbol that lets us think about our own experiences of waiting, yearning, thinking, and hoping. The beauty of “Still” is that it doesn’t try to tell us what the woman is thinking, but instead gives us the space to wonder about it ourselves. This way, the image becomes more personal and universal at the same time, allowing us to connect with it on a deeper level. By not giving us all the answers, the piece encourages us to fill in the gaps with our own thoughts and emotions, making it a really impactful and thought-provoking work.
In the broader context of “Echoes of Light”, the photograph can be regarded as a strong example of contemporary fine art photography in which atmosphere becomes as important as subject matter. Kareem demonstrates that stillness does not necessarily mean inactivity. Sometimes, the quietest moments contain the greatest movement within the mind. “Still” captures precisely such a moment: a human being standing in the midst of a vast city, looking towards the freedom of the sky, while light breaks through the darkness.
