England’s national team head coach, Gareth Southgate, has condemned racial abuse targeted at black players on England’s team.
Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka have been targeted on social media with racial abuses after they missed penalties in the 3-2 shootout defeat at Wembley Stadium.
But speaking at a virtual press conference earlier on Monday, July 12, 2021, Southgate says “For some of them to be abused is unforgivable.”
“Some of it has come from abroad, we have been told this, but some of it is from this country,” he added.
“We have been a beacon of light to bring people together and the national team stands for everybody. We felt the energy and positivity from the fans and I’m incredibly proud of that,” Southgate says.
