Open defecation in session
About 30 landlords in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis are being processed for court by the Environmental Health Department of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) for allegedly refusing to provide toilet facilities in their houses.
The move is part of the measures by the Assembly to clamp down on open defecation.
All landlords are required to provide toilet facilities for their tenants by law, and there are penalties for defaulters.
However, over the years, authorities have relaxed the enforcement of this law.
The STMA has, however, decided to crack the whip on purported errant landlords, and in the process about 30 of them have been identified and are being processed for court.
The Assistant Environmental Health Officer in charge of Analysis at STMA, Aaron Quansah, noted that the Assembly will do all within its power to eradicate the menace of open defecation.
He, however, mentioned that the STMA through the ‘Twin City in Sustainable Project’ will be assisting some landlords with the requisite financial support to provide toilet facilities for their tenants.
He, therefore, encouraged landlords and landladies to take advantage of the project and make their requests since it is unlawful to put up residential apartments without making provision for toilet facilities.
