The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Otiko Afisa Djabah, has warned all officers of the Department of Social Welfare to desist from facilitating illegal adoption of children in the country.
According to her, officers should not facilitate the adoption of children without recourse to proper procedures and accountability.
Ms Afisah Djaba revealed this at a two-day workshop organized for regional officers of the Department of Social Welfare on the new approach to foster care and adoption in Koforidua, the Eastern Regional capital, yesterday.
The two-day workshop, which was organized by the Ministry for Gender, Children and Social Protection, was to educate the participants on best practices and new requirements in foster care and adoption.
When an audit was instituted into the residential facilities, it was revealed that about 80 percent of children were there due to economic hardships and not because they have no relations, the Minister said.
She urged the officers to work hard to ensure quality service delivery in Ghana and act as change agents.
The Acting Director of Department of Social Welfare, Gbeawu Daniel Nonah, on his part, said they were ready to sanitize the child care delivery system to ensure that children have proper protection in the country.
