The Tamale Metropolitan Assembly, has distributed 700 dual desks to 10 schools within the metropolis in the Northern Region.
Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive, Sule Salifu, who handed over the dual desks to the basic schools, indicated that the presentation forms part of the assembly’s commitment to providing quality education and creating conducive environment for teaching and learning in schools in the Tamale metropolis.
He, however, cautioned residents to desist from stealing dual desks from schools, and using them as firewood in their homes.
“We are told that in many of the communities, these dual desks are stolen and sold to scrap dealers while others use it for firewood in the house, and so I want to say that this practice is not good for our children as far as access to quality education is concerned,” he disclosed.
The Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive appealed to chiefs, assembly members and other stakeholders to ensure that the dual desks in various schools in their locality are protected.
He assured that the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly will continue to provide schools with dual desks and other learning materials to enhance teaching and learning in the metropolis.
Mr. Salifu disclosed that the Local Government Ministry has included the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly in the Gulf of Guinea Northern Regions Social Cohesion Project (SOCO), which is a collaboration between the World Bank and the Government of Ghana.
According to him, the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly will receive about GH¢ 4.2 million, and that the assembly will invest part of the money into the education sector.
“This support will go a long way to strengthen access to teaching and learning, and out of the GH¢4.2 million, about GH¢2.1 million will be used to construct a modern astro turf stadium for the Zogbeli Cluster of Schools to enable us discover football talents,” he added.
