Thief Caged 10 Years

Raffique Alhassan, The convict

A thief has been convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Old Tafo Circuit Court in Kumasi, the Ashanti Region.

The convict, Raffique Alhassan, 26, a sprayer, was found guilty by the court for stealing, which is contrary to Section 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act 29/60.

Alhassan had previously been convicted in a similar case at the Juaben Circuit Court in 2016, so the Old Tafo Circuit Court decided to give him an enhanced sentence of 10 years.

Per the facts of the case, the complainant, Solomon Kwabena, is a motor tricycle (Aboboyaa) rider, whilst the accused, Raffique Alhassan, is a sprayer. They both stay at Moshie Zongo.

On March 30, 2024 at about 9pm, the complainant returned home from work and met the accused sitting in front of his door and questioned him about it.

Alhassan retorted that he was waiting for the brother of the complainant, one Gabriel. The complainant sacked the accused from his house and both of them went out.

Later in the night, the complainant returned home and found out that someone had broken into his room and made away with personal effects including an amount of GH¢3,160.

Other items that were taken away included 17 Sheda dresses, five pairs of shoes, six wrist watches, two pomades, one champagne and jersey, all valued at GH¢5,500.

The complainant suspected the accused person and traced him to his hideout at Ankaase on April 1, 2024 and got him arrested and handed him over to the Tafo Pankrono Police.

During investigations, the accused person led the police to Ankaase and retrieved the exhibits except the money.  In his caution statement in the presence of an independent witness, he admitted the offense and was charged with same.
