Eric Kojo Duah
The trial of Eric Kojo Duah, aka Sakora, the man accused of killing two police officers at Buduburam in the Central Region, on August 28, 2019, has started at Accra High Court.
Duah pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder before a seven-member jury.
Kojo Duah is being held for allegedly murdering Sergeant Michael Dzamasi, a service driver, and L/Cpl Awal Mohammed, at a spot called Big Apple at Buduburam, near Kasoa.
Another accused person, Michael Osarfo Ani, has been charged with abetment to commit murder.
At the High Court, the prosecution, led by Nana Akua Prempeh, a State Attorney, narrated the facts of the case to the Court and expected to call six witnesses to make their case.
Augustine Obuor, who represented Duah, asked the jury to consider what they would do should they be attacked by armed robbers in their bedroom, claiming that was the case of Duah.
Defense counsel said it sound completely abnormal that his client would take a gun to shoot two policemen.
In the case of Ani’s lawyer, Isaac Okyere Kumah, he invited the jury to use Ghana’s law to assess the case before them.
The Court has adjourned the matter to December 8.
It further ordered the prosecution to file their disclosures and serve same on the accused persons.
The prosecution said Duah allegedly shot Sgt Dzamesi and L/Corporal Awal, both attached to the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service at Budumburam, who were on taskforce duties on the Kasoa-Winneba Highway.
It said Duah, in the company of his friends, using an unregistered Toyota Camry vehicle, and driving recklessly, allegedly shot the unarmed policemen after refusing to stop when the security officers signalled them to do so.
The prosecution said Ani who was seated in front offered the gun to Duah and he allegedly chased the two policemen who sought refuge in a shop.
It said Duah was arrested at Atimpoku in the Eastern Region, adding that he and Ani abandoned their vehicle at Kokrobite but some documents left in the car led to their arrest.
The prosecution said post-mortem conducted indicated both policemen died of haermorrogic shock and severe gun shots at a close range.
