‘We Don’t Support Galamsey’

Johnson Asiedu Nketia

JOHNSON ASIEDU Nketia, General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has stated that the largest opposition party does not support illegal mining popularly known as galamsey, neither does he.

According to Mr. Nketia, he condemned galamsey operations when he spoke on Oyerepa FM in Kumasi last Friday during an interview on the devastating impact of the menace on the environment.

In a letter to DAILY GUIDE yesterday, Mr. Nketia said he clarified during the radio programme the preparedness of the NDC to institute sustaining mining practices should it be elected into power in 2024.

The NDC Chief Scribe had stated that his party would not stop mining, adding that no government could stop mining in Ghana except to employ appropriate measures to guide how the country’s mineral resources could be extracted.

“We won’t stop mining; we’ll extract the resources. The extraction isn’t the dilemma, but the method is the problem. If anyone promises to stop mining in Ghana, that person is a liar,” Asiedu Nketia emphasised.

The NDC General Secretary added that most of the youth in the various mining communities largely depended on mining for survival, therefore, it would put requisite measures in place to engender sustainable mining.

He said if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration was desirous of stopping illegal mining, it should deal with kingpins within its fold and put down guidelines for miners to follow.

Any inconvenience caused to Mr. Asiedu Nketia and the NDC is deeply regretted.
