It was an interesting sight to behold when President Akufo-Addo made a triumphant entry into the Winneba township Thursday evening.
The President had gone there to commission a housing project in the Effutu constituency which has Afenyo Markin as its Member of Parliament (MP) and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for the area.
But even before he arrived in constituency around 7pm after similar visits to other constietuencies, people had literally taken over the streets amid drumming and dancing.
Hordes of NPP supporters had gathered right from famous Winneba roundabout, defying the rains to catch a glimpse of the man with chants of ‘Nana waaba oo’ literally translated as ‘Nana has come’ whilst following his convoy.
Apparently, they had been waiting for several hours with bated-breath for the man’s arrival and some had had to eventually give up and headed back home when all hope seem lost.
But, upon hearing the blurring sirens of the presidential motorcade those that had enough patience to wait went into a frenzy.
That was what resulted in the chants of ‘Nana waaba oo’ to send a message back to town that the man has arrived.
They waved the President with the famous four fingers which has become synanymous with the 2020 NPP campaign with shouts of ‘four more’.
Not even the rains could stop
them from coming out of their homes in leaps and bounds.
The entire township was chocked with ecstatic supporters clad in Akufo-Addo and Afenyo Markin branded t-shirts with some running after the convoy whilst others had lined up on the narrow streets to wave at him.
What surprised many was the tenacity of some of these party supporters to defy the rains to walk a distance of about 8kilometers to and fro the site where the housing project was being commissioned which is located in the interior part of Winneba just to observe the ceremony.
At a point, the President’s convoy got stuck in traffic for almost 10 minutes due to the numbers that had poured on the streets.
His security detail and the local police had a hell of time making way for the convoy back into town.
From there, the President Akufo-Addo went to commission another project in the Winneba township, the Nixin Paper Mill Company Limited, a One District One Factory initiative before heading for the Central regional capital, Cape Coast to spend the night.
