Winneba Varsity Violence Costs GH¢250,000

MA 27-year-old graphic designer, who attacked a 102-year-old woman in his bid to rob her, has been sentenced to five years’ imprisonment by an Accra Circuit Court.

Joel Mawuli Mensa, who was charged with causing harm, pleaded guilty.

Mensa told the court that he thought the old woman had money tied around her waist.

The convict, however, denied another charge of attempting to commit crime.

The court, presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh, sentenced him on the charge of causing harm.

The court, however, ordered him to reappear on April 1, to answer the charge of attempt to commit crime.

The prosecutor, Chief Inspector Willian K. Boateng, said the complainant Leticia Osabukle resides at Teshie, while Mensah also lives in the same area and currently unemployed.

Chief Inspector Boateng said on March 7, this year, at about 1900 hours, Madam Osabukle went to a toilet, which is located in the same yard but a few meters from her room.

Prosecution said suddenly Mensa pounced on the complainant and attempted to remove money tied around her waist.

The complainant shouted for help but Mensa later covered her mouth.

Prosecution said Mensa pushed the complainant to ground and fractured her leg, adding that he then sat on her to take out the supposed money.

He said Mensa, who was not happy that the convict picked a broken tile, attempted to harm the complainant.

The prosecution said a witness in the case, who heard the screams of the complainant, rushed to the scene and rescued her.

Mensa escaped by scaling the wall but left behind his sandals behind.

He said a report was made to the Police at Nungua who issued a medical form to the complainant to seek medical assistance.

The prosecution said the complainant was admitted at the 37 Military Hospital and later treated and discharged.
