Young Innovators Dazzle At GSTEP 2025 Final

Team Technocrafts Innowear, 2025 GSTEP winners

YOUNG INNOVATORS from basic schools across the country converged at the National Theatre on July 16 and 17, 2025 with a display of dazzling and inspiring real-life innovations at the 2025 Ghana Science and Tech Explorer Challenge Prize (GSTEP) final.

The event which saw 50 finalist teams from various basic schools was a display of what lies in store for Ghana’s future as the nation embraces science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education to bridge disparities in the education sector.

This year’s GSTEP Exhibition and Awards Ceremony provided the platform to celebrate young innovators who are using STEM to bring about positive change in their communities.

Officials of both the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Ghana Education Service who attended the exhibition and award ceremony have endorsed its ingenuity and pledged their commitment to empower the future generations through STEM.

At the end of this year’s final, Team Technocrafts Innowear from Services Primary and JHS (Greater Accra Region), emerged overall winners.

They developed an innovation inspired by a real-life kidnapping incident involving a team member.

Team SCI-G – (Eastern Region) finished second while Team Eco-Fuel Agenda – (Ashanti Region) came third.

Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak in a keynote address indicated that the GSTEP highlights the power of opportunity, of what becomes possible when we challenge young minds to think critically, work collaboratively, and build boldly.

“I have seen firsthand how practical STEM education can unlock potential and reshape our nation’s future. It is initiatives like GSTEP that give us hope that the future we imagine is within reach,” he said.

Dr. Apaak reaffirmed the Ministry’s support for the GSTEP Challenge and similar initiatives that empower youth, reduce inequality, and bring education to life.

“Together, we will ensure that every Ghanaian child—no matter their location—has the chance to dream, to build, and to lead,” he added.

The Deputy Director General for Quality and Access at the Ghana Education Service (GES), Dr. Issahaque Munawaru said the GSTEP model aligns strongly with the goals of GES; embed practical, skills-based STEM learning across all schools.

He said it also bridges regional and socio-economic disparities in education access, and strengthens teacher capacity to lead innovation and guide learners effectively.

He assured that GES will work with GSTEP to promote STEM at the JHS level, scale up the project, leveraging GES infrastructure nationwide to address disparities, and work collaboratively with them to ensure sustainability through continuous teacher training.

The Founder of the GSTEP Challenge, Constance Agyeman, praised the finalists for the creativity and innovation they exhibited.

She said this year’s inventions underscore the impact of practical, inclusive, and community-focused STEM education and urged GES and MoE to lend further support to the initiative.
