The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed that 11 people died and 13 others sustained injuries in a fatal accident at Ofankor Barrier involving a tipper truck and a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus.
According to DO1 Emmanuel Bonney, Head of Communications at the GNFS, the crash occurred when the tipper truck and the passenger bus collided under circumstances yet to be established.
Fire personnel who responded to the scene worked to rescue trapped passengers from the wreckage of the Sprinter bus.
“The injured victims were rushed to Achimota Hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue pending identification and autopsy,” DO1 Bonney stated.
The Ofankor Barrier stretch is one of the busiest entry points into Accra and has recorded several fatal crashes in recent years, largely due to heavy vehicular traffic and speeding.
The Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) has since commenced investigations to determine the exact cause of the crash, including possible factors such as over-speeding, wrongful overtaking, or mechanical failure.
The GNFS has urged drivers to exercise caution, adhere to road safety regulations, and avoid reckless driving, especially on major highways leading into the capital.
Meanwhile, families of the victims have begun trooping to hospitals and police stations to identify their relatives.
