17 Police Officers Crash In Accident

Seventeen Police officers from the Eastern Regional Police Command are currently battling for their lives after being injured in an accident last Saturday.

The gory accident reportedly occurred in between the Apirede Akuapem to Somanya road, after the vehicle in which the officers were traveling in experienced brake failure while descending a hill.

Three of the officers are in critical conditions at the Eastern Regional Hospital, Koforidua while the others are receiving treatment at Atua Government Hospital.

The Eastern Regional Police PRO, DSP Ebenezer Tetteh who confirmed the incident explained that “indeed on 27th November at about 6:30am Police Woman, Gladys Paddy in charge of 17 men from the Regional Police Command onboard Mercedes Benz sprinter bus with registration number GP6780-20 driven by Kofi Asare from Koforidua to Somanya on official duty.

According to him, on reaching a section of the road between Apirede and Somanya the suspect driver allegedly failed to break whilst descending the Apirede hills resulting in an accident.

DSP Tetteh continues that “The personnel on board of the vehicle sustained various degrees of injuries and were rushed to Atua Government Hospital in Somanya for treatment”.

He added that “Three of them meanwhile have been referred to the Eastern Regional Hospital for further treatment because of the extend of their injuries.”

Early on Sunday afternoon, the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare with some of the senior officers visited the Eastern Regional Hospital to visit the injured Police officers.

Similar Incident

Meanwhile, two police officers from the Anti-Robbery Taskforce have also been confirmed dead in a fatal accident on the Walewale-Bolgatanga road in the North East Region on Thursday.

The two were part of a five-member team responding to a robbery incident on that stretch.
A statement issued by the police on Thursday said three other officers who were part of the team are in critical condition at a nearby health facility in Walewale.

“The families of the two officers have been informed of the sad incident and the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has spoken to them”, the police statement signed by the acting director-general in charge of Public Affairs, ACP Kwesi Ofori read.
