CPA Demands Load Shedding Timetable

The Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) has called on the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission (PURC) to immediately release a timetable for the current load shedding programme.

“The CPA is calling on the PURC to wake up from its slumber and demand with immediate effect a timetable for this current load shedding and the time lines into which this load shedding will end from the service providers i.e. VRA, GRIDCO and ECG so that consumers can plan and adjust to the situation,” a statement signed by the Executive Chairman of CPA, Kofi Kapito, said.

Ghanaians have been experiencing power outages for nearly four years with several promises of President John Mahama to end the crisis not materializing.

The development has forced many businesses to fold up which has led to the dismissal of many employees.

CPA, in the statement, expressed happiness about efforts being made by government to improve the power sector.

“The CPA is aware of the recent purchase of crude to improve power generation in the country,” it said.

“The CPA has observed that for the past months, consumers of electricity have been going through interrupted power supply which can best be described as load shedding exercise being carried out by the utility service providers.”

“The consumer has been left in the darkness with no information as to the end of this predicament.”

CPA argued that “it is the mandate of the PURC to see that the timetable is provided during this unfortunate situation.”
