Three persons, including two police officers attached to the Rapid Deployment Force and their alleged civilian accomplice have been dragged before an Accra circuit court for robbery.
They are (No. 41352) G/L/CPL Isaac Amejor, Crossby Ofori Danso, unemployed and (No. 49491) Constable Samuel Asamoah.
The three suspects are alleged to have conspired to rob and robbed one Christopher Haga, a student, at Abeka Lapaz in Accra on Sunday, March 19, 2017.
According to the prosecutor, DSP Mawunyo Nanegbe, the trio, armed with an AK 47 rifle, forcefully robbed the said complainant to the tune of GH¢11,000.
In the court, presided over by Justice Aboagye Tandoh, the accused persons, who were without lawyers, denied the charges preferred against them.
The court accordingly remanded them until April 7.
The facts of the case are that Isaac and Samuel are officers of the Rapid Deployment Force, headquarters and Kasoa respectively.
On the said day Christopher was sent by his brother to withdraw the said amount sent to him by his friend at Global Access Bank, Lapaz branch.
While waiting for a taxi to go home after withdrawing the money, he was attacked by the three accused persons, according to the police.
Isaac, who was in a police uniform and armed with an AK 47 assault rifle, together with the two other accomplices, pushed Christopher into a waiting taxi and sped off to the Nyaho Clinic area at Dzorwulu, a suburb of Accra.
The accused persons, according to the prosecution, informed the complainant that they had received a report that the money he went to withdraw from the bank was stolen, as such, he was wanted at the police station for questioning, but Christopher disagreed, denying any wrongdoing.
“The accused persons would not take any explanation from the complainant but insisted that the transaction at the bank was fraudulent. However, the complainant agreed to follow the accused persons to the police headquarters but pleaded to communicate with his brother; but strangely, the accused persons refused and drove the taxi to the Ghana International Trade Fair site at gunpoint threatening to ‘finish’ him if he dared them,” the police said.
On his way home, Christopher spotted Isaac who was on duty at Prudential Bank, Bawaleshie branch, and informed his brother who quickly mobilized and got him arrested and GH¢2,000 cash retrieved from him.
Isaac led the police to arrest Crossby at Kasoa and he also refunded GH¢4,056 said to be his share of the money taken from Christopher.
Samuel, a police officer on interdiction, was arrested two days later.
In their statements, the three admitted taking the money from Christopher because it was obtained fraudulently.
