The Asokore Mampong Municipality in the Ashanti Region, has witnessed two shooting incidents within seven days, causing panic among residents.

During the first incident, a teenager was shot in the head whilst he was partying with other revelers during the Sallah jams at the Bonjour Restaurant.

Even though the teenager, a Junior High School (JHS) leaver, survived the attack, the shocking incident sparked fears and concerns in the area.

As the incident was gradually subsiding, reports of notorious armed robbers engaging police in a gun battle at Aboabo Akurem on Monday also emerged.

During the Monday shooting incident, a policeman was shot in the thigh and one of the robbers was shot dead, deepening fears of residents in the area.

MCE Comments

Hon. Alidu Seidu, speaking on Otec FM, said the Sallah celebration was virtually peaceful in the area but for the shooting incident at Bonjour restaurant.

According to him, the Bonjour restaurant incident was an isolated case therefore nobody should use it as a yardstick to incite fear in the residents.

Alidu Seidu stated that the shooting incident at Aboabo Akurem was a clear indication that the police were firmly in control of the security situation.

He said the notorious robbers, led by one Basit, committed a crime at Tema in the Greater Accra Region and fled to hide in the abandoned hospital project at Aboabo Akurem.

Alidu Seidu stated that because the police in his municipality were active, they managed to shoot one of the robbers dead, few minutes after their arrival.

Robbers Den

He said hardened robbers usually take refuge in the abandoned building which was being put up by a private developer who unfortunately passed on.

Alidu Seidu indicated that the assembly would contact the family of the late developer to see what can be done to put the facility into shape.
