Joe Ghartey – Railway Minister
Employees of Afcons Infrastructure Limited, which is constructing the 80-kilometer single gauge Tema-Akosombo Railway Line, have called off their four-day sit down strike.
The workers, numbering over 200, on Friday morning resumed their normal duties after officials from the Labour Office, Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC), third party contractors, AFCONS management and P4olice, resolved the problems on Thursday.
Addressing the workers after the meeting, Eric Adelaquaye, Head, Industrial Relations Department, TUC, instructed them to resume work while the union officials mediated with management to get all their grievances addressed.
Mr. Adelaquaye assured the workers that they have the right to collective bargaining as the law stipulates, therefore TUC would ensure their rights are not curtailed.
Comfort Agambaa, General Secretary, General Construction Manufacturing and Quarry Workers Union of TUC, on her part, announced that all necessary documents needed to fast-track the registration of workers with their preferred unions were ready.
She assured the workers that the registration process would commence soon, adding that neither management nor third party contractors would victimize them for embarking on the strike.
Rexford Asubonteng, Tema Metro Director, National Labor Commission (NLC), also urged the workers to forward their grievances to the Commission.
Forty-one police personnel from the Dodowa District Police Command, led by Chief Superintendent Patrick Kwapong, Dodowa District Police Commander, were positioned at the site to maintain law and order during the strike.
