Those who thought out a day on which to recognise the achievements and role of women did well; they deserve as much kudos as members of the feminine gender we celebrated yesterday.
So much water has passed under the bridge since the first recognition of the achievements of women transformed into a global event and attracting assortment of tributes from their inseparable male counterparts.
When we hear the accolades being showered upon women worldwide vis-a-vis their enduring tribulations at the hands of male chauvinists at the place of work, we wonder whether they are being sincere. Be it as it may, it is our prayer the stereotyping would stop.
It is gratifying nonetheless that a more orderly celebration of women has taken the international stage as we observed it yesterday.
The recognition of women could not have come a more opportune time than now.
From the rural setting to the urban and even the corporate world, women continue to play important roles even as they endure subtle and sometimes open discrimination.
This year’s #Break The Bias theme is just right as we hope that the bias against the feminine gender will over the subsequent years fade and head for the chapters of history.
Several years ago, it was unthinkable that women would one day hold positions they do today. These were periods in the history of the world when this gender was considered unfit for certain positions and even professions.
Today, women have proved their mettle as they rub shoulders in all professions and occupations with their male counterparts.
From fighter pilots in the Air Forces of most countries to surgeons and as artisans, they continue to shine and are even doing better than their male counterparts.
Male chauvinism should be thrown overboard as the twin genders  join hands for the betterment of a world which needs such partnership more than before.
At a time when global warming is threatening the health of the world, both genders should come together in the fight against this handicap.
Society should mould a campaign to educate residents of our rural settings to step off the threshold of sex discrimination. This segment of our society is a place where women’s role as hewers of wood and drawers of water continues somewhat unabated.
Let us continue to work together to push the gender bias to the dustbin of history.
In the military, as well as the other security agencies today, there is a deliberate gender programme to ensure that women in uniform do not suffer setbacks as a result of their sex.
With the creation of a Gender Ministry, we can heave a sigh of relief that officially efforts are being made to enhance the status of women. Hip, hip, hip, hurray to our women.
