THREE SUSPECTS have been remanded into police custody in connection with the recent riots at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
The trio, including Emmanuel Appiah Amoah, Kwabena Kwarteng Amaniampong and Eugene Noamesi, are expected to reappear before the same court on October 4, 2022.
The suspects have been charged for rioting and causing unlawful damage. This follows recent mayhem at the KNUST when Katanga Hall and Unity Hall students clashed on campus.
During the clashes, the rampaging students caused destruction to properties including CCTV cameras. They also smashed the windscreen of some vehicles with stones.
Two suspects were initially arrested in connection with the violent clashes. Afterwards, the court issued a bench warrant for the arrest of 62 other suspects. This led to the arrest of the three suspects.
When the trio appeared at the Asokore Mampong Court last Friday, their lawyers appealed to the court to grant them bail, with a promise that they would assist in investigations.
But the appeal was not granted as the prosecution team also argued that they should be caged to assist the police in their investigations, which is ongoing.
The court, presided over by the Relieving Magistrate Judge, H/W Hilda Esther Whyter, eventually granted the wish of the prosecution team and remanded the suspects into police custody.
The court also tasked the police to ensure that the suspects would be moved to and from campus to write their examination.
