The District Assemblies Common Fund Administrator and key member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Irene Naa Torshie Addo-Lartey, has urged the party to rally support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

Reacting to the selection of Dr. Opoku Prempeh as the running mate to partner with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to lead the NPP in the December 7 polls, Irene Naa Torshie Addo-Lartey congratulated Napo, as he is affectionately called, and extolled his experience, dedication, and attributes in politics spanning decades.

“Matthew, as we call him, Napo, is hardworking, a fighter, and a Member of Parliament with about 16 years of experience who has stood in the gap with us [NPP] until now. Before then, he was involved in student politics at the KNUST, SRC, etc.,” she emphasised.

“He [Napo] is not just anybody but an astute politician and a goal-getter. The flagbearer Dr. Bawumia is already doing great, and Dr. Opoku Prempeh will surely complement him,” Madam Addo-Lartey added.

The NPP National Executive Council (NEC) unanimously endorsed Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh on Thursday, July 4, 2024, after a decisive meeting was held to underline the constitutional mandate as per Article 13(3)(1) of the NPP Constitution, which empowers the party’s presidential candidate, in consultation with the National Council, to nominate a vice presidential candidate.

Naa Torshie encouraged supporters within the party to unite behind the Bawumia-Opoku Prempeh ticket to win the general election on December 7, 2024.

“I don’t want to sound biased, but I think the future of this country lies with the NPP when it comes to development and taking the country forward; I don’t think there’s an alternative. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is a gem for this party, and we need to look at not just the party but the personalities leading it,” Madam Addo-Lartey said.

Irene Naa Torshie Addo also shared some words with individuals and supporters who tipped her to be selected as the running mate of Dr. Bawumia.

“To those who were hoping that I would be selected as the running mate, I will say let’s respect the decision of the party and work hard to retain power,” she concluded.
