The Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has written to the Electoral Commission (EC) requesting for a live media broadcast of their meeting tomorrow, where they will present their observations on the 2024 provisional voter register.
The meeting, which is scheduled to take place at 2 pm at the EC’s Corporate Head Office near the National Cathedral at Ridge, is expected to be a crucial one, as the NDC will be sharing their concerns and findings on the voter register.
According to the NDC, in a statement issued by the party’s General Secretary, Fiifi Kwetey, the request for a live broadcast is in line with their commitment to transparency and accountability.
He lamented that Ghanaians have the right to know, in real-time, the issues they have identified with the voter register and the discussions they will have with the EC.
The opposition party has been vocal about their concerns with the voter register, citing issues such as duplicate entries, deceased persons still on the register, and other anomalies.
The controversy surrounding the 2024 provisional voter register has been ongoing for several weeks.
The NDC has been at the forefront of the criticism, accusing the EC of failing to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the register.
The party has claimed that the register contains numerous errors and anomalies, which could compromise the credibility of the electoral process.
The party’s Minority Leader in Parliament, Cassiel Ato Forson, has already officially notified Parliament that all NDC MPs would not accept the register as credible and fit-for-purpose until a forensic audit is conducted into its database.
“The Electoral Commission has admitted that the voters register is riddled with some irregularities and flaws. I dare say, Mr. Speaker, the scale of these irregularities is such that someone may have tempered with the vote register database,” Ato Forson said in Parliament on Tuesday, September 3.
The party’s Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, has also added his voice to the concerns, calling for the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Adukwei Mensa, to be summoned to appear before the House to explain the several instances of irregularities and flaws contained in the voters register.
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission has admitted that there were some mistakes in the provisional voters register of some constituencies, but has assured that the anomalies have been corrected.
The EC’s Deputy Commissioner in charge of Corporate Affairs, Dr. Eric Bossman Asare, has stated that the corrected anomalies would be shared with all political parties.
