Don’t Reset Judiciary

President John Mahama

It is our expectation that the demand of Ghanaians that President Mahama reverses the suspension of the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo is obliged.

Yesterday, the aversion to the suspension was taken a step further by the membership of political parties. They massed up at the forecourt of the Supreme Court to present a petition about their aversion to the attack on the judiciary by the President.

The action was repeated at Parliament House, and we think that the President should in the interest of democracy listen to the voices of Ghanaians who would rather the judiciary is spared such actions which only go to show the deep-seated hatred for this arm of government by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

There is a spectre of fear around the country, and it reminds us about the days when people had to look around their shoulders when talking under the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) junta.

We do not want a return of that junta because we have tasted democracy, the rule of law and know the difference between the foregone and dictatorship.

We are determined as a people to uphold the tenets of democracy and resist oppressors’ rule. After all, the constitution enjoins us to do so.

When the people speak, their voices must be heard because, after all, they voted them to power.

The so-called resetting should not be extended to the judiciary because of its special role in our democracy.

Past experiences have showed us that such affronts on the judiciary casts ill-winds on the country, something we have long confined to the dustbin of history.

Afenyo-Markin said it all when he said that Ghanaians want employment.

We do not want such political theatricals because they do not add to the fortunes of the nation.

Yesterday’s demonstration was a loud voice of the people ignoring which would not be tolerated.

We want the fulfilment of the promises made to Ghanaians, which convinced them to vote for the NDC.

We have not seen the implementation of the one job for three persons template. It has stopped appearing in speeches let alone implementation.

Were we scammed as a people? Perhaps the blending of lies, half-truths theory is after all with the NDC. This is exactly what we are witnessing in our national affairs.

It is just four months or so and the signs are not encouraging. It is too early for the President to exuding his third-term project through first, kicking out the Chief Justice.

The world is riveting its attention upon us, having previously given us a credit for how far we have come in the implementation of democracy.

With the petitions presented, we call on the President and especially his advisors to caution him against intransigence in the matter under review.

There is nothing wrong with retreating, it is a mark of wisdom not cowardice.
