Prof. Henry Kwasi Prempeh
The Constitution Review Committee (CRC) has so far received nearly 500 written submissions from individuals and organisations proposing amendments to the 1992 Constitution.
Chairman of the CRC, Prof. Henry Kwasi Prempeh, who revealed this, said the memos, submitted via email and in person, reflect growing public interest and participation in the ongoing constitutional review process.
According to him, the CRC has entered its third month of public engagement, noting that the eight-member committee has been consulting a broad spectrum of Ghanaians through thematic stakeholder sessions, identifiable interest group meetings, and high-level discussions with eminent persons.
He said a total of 12 thematic stakeholder engagements, five identifiable group meetings, and eight eminent person consultations have been conducted.
Prof. Prempeh indicated that all stakeholder and group engagements have been livestreamed to ensure transparency and inclusivity.
He stated that while most of the thematic areas have been covered, outstanding sessions on chieftaincy and citizenship are expected to be held in the coming weeks.
The committee has also met with various interest groups, including representatives from business, labour, academia, student bodies, security agencies, and the media, with additional engagements planned with traditional authorities and religious leaders.
As part of its high-level consultations, the committee has engaged several prominent national figures, including former Presidents John Dramani Mahama and John Agyekum Kufuor, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, former Speaker Professor Mike Oquaye, former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo, and constitutional experts such as Nana S.K.B. Asante and Professor Kwamena Ahwoi.
These interactions have provided valuable insights from individuals with longstanding experience in governance and constitutional development, the CRC Chairman said.
He noted that the committee remains committed to engaging as many voices as possible, and confirmed plans to consult additional high-level figures in the coming weeks.
“We do plan to engage both former President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia, their schedules permitting,” he stated.
He indicated that in the coming weeks, the committee would hold zonal public engagements in key cities including Accra, Kumasi, Tamale, Cape Coast, and Ho, among others.
He added that an online engagement targeting the Ghanaian diaspora is also being planned, pointing out that the dates for these sessions would be announced soon.
Meanwhile, as part of its digital outreach efforts, Prof. Prempeh said the committee would host a live X (formerly Twitter) Space conversation today, Monday, May 19, 2025, at 7:00 p.m., which would be moderated by social media influencer Kaly Jay.
He encouraged Ghanaians to continue submitting their proposals to submissions@constitutionreviewgh.org or deliver them in person at the CRC Secretariat, Office of the President Annex, Abdul Diouf Road, Ridge, Accra.
