Accra Minister Fires ‘Sleeping- On-Job’ MMDCEs

Linda Ocloo

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, has launched a scathing attack on underperforming Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the region, accusing them of complacency, inefficiency, and abuse of office.

Addressing journalists and MMDCEs at an engagement session in Accra yesterday, Madam Ocloo said the failure of some chief executives to meet their responsibilities was undermining government’s efforts to tackle the capital’s critical development challenges.

“I am disappointed at the level of inefficiency and complacency exhibited by some of our chief executives. At this stage, excuses are nothing but an embarrassment to the people we serve,” she declared.

The Regional Minister warned that leadership was not about occupying offices or enjoying perks but about delivering tangible results. She accused some MMDCEs of “sleeping on the job” and prioritising partisan activities over their official duties.

“I have reports that many of you have turned your offices into party meeting grounds, filling them with unauthorised officials and visitors, while your staff, the very people you are supposed to lead, are denied access to discuss official matters. This is abuse of office and unacceptable,” she said.

Madam Ocloo also took issue with the growing influence of personal assistants (PAs) in the assemblies, saying some had usurped the official duties of MMDCEs.

“If you have decided to bring PAs, let them be clear that their role is strictly to help you organise schedules, manage time, and provide administrative support. They are not to approve documents or represent you at official meetings. This must stop immediately. Assemblies cannot be run by unelected and unappointed individuals hiding behind your authority,” she charged.

She further expressed dissatisfaction with the state of sanitation in the region, warning that excuses would no longer be tolerated.

“Sanitation in Accra is very poor. The era of excuses is over. I won’t hesitate to recommend your removal from office if sanitation in your assemblies continues to worsen,” she cautioned.

The Minister reminded the MMDCEs of the sensitivity of certain meetings at the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), stressing that no chief executive should attend with their PAs.

“Some issues are strictly confidential. Do not attend RCC meetings with your PAs. Learn from past mistakes. This must stop immediately,” she emphasised.
